WWII Hungarian M38 Steel Helmet

During World War II, Hungary was an ally of Germany, and with German assistance it copied the M35 steel helmet design. The resulting M38 Hungarian helmet was nearly identical to the German M35, sharing its shape, riveted ventilation holes, and rolled edge. Differences included the liner system, liner-pin position, and a small horizontal rectangular carrying hook above the rear brim, which was used to attach the helmet to a backpack while on the move.

The M38 became one of the Finnish Army’s most common helmets during the Continuation War of 1941–44. Finland had originally sought German M35 helmets during the Winter War to supplement its stocks of German World War I M17 and M18 helmets, but Germany redirected the order to Hungary for political reasons. Although the order was placed in December 1939, the helmets were not shipped until after the Winter War ended in March 1940.

The Finnish Army continued using some M38 helmets from World War II until the early 1970s.
